This meet would not have been possible without the help of the fantastically wonderful managers who kept track of the little swimmers and made sure that they got to their races on time. We would also like to thank the parents who joined us and cheered us on! Go Aqualions!

Brent Varsity Touch Rugby Team Wins at ISM
The Brent Varsity Touch Rugby Team certainly did not let us down as they opened the season with a bang! They played against the ISM JV Team and emerged victorious with a final score of 3 touchdowns to Brent and 2 touchdowns to ISM.
The ladies, led by Alex Heinen, played extremely well at the beginning of the game and secured the lead early on with 3–0 at the end of the first half. All 3 touchdowns were off superb drives, a vital play in touch rugby.
ISM came back strongly in the second half, tightening the game, through the injection of several of their varsity players into the game.
The second half of the game was another story. ISM tightened their defense and counterattacked better utilizing a few of their varsity players.
Upper School Academic Bowl Team Traveled to IS
The Upper School Academic Bowl team traveled to IS to take on ISM and Faith in the first Academic Bowl competition of the school year. Brent had some strong moments in the competition. In the opening head-to-head match with ISM the Lions and Bearcats were neck and neck trading correct answers until the end of the round. In the toss-up round featuring all three teams Brent beat the best team from ISM and the best team from Faith. In the final penalty round where you lose points for wrong answers the Brent team which featured 5 girls, three of the team competing for the first time managed to answer more questions correctly than the other two teams. While the team finished third overall for the day everyone competed, worked hard and represented their families and Brent well. The next big event will be in April and will feature other Brent teams, Shanghai American School and perhaps some others.
Brent Chess Team Scored in Prada Event
Our Brent Chess Team (Midgets) crushed the Don Bosco Technical Institute (DBTI) Chess Team, 3 – 1, in the 9th Round on the resumption of the PRADA Chess Team Championship held last Saturday, November 8, at the ES Cafeteria of International School-Manila, The Fort, Taguig City.
It was a rousing win by Brent Lion Chess Kings against veteran opponents from DBTI. First to win his game was Board 4 player Jong Hyun “Jupiter” Lee, a Grade 5 student, who checkmated his helpless opponent in a King’s Indian Attack game. Also scoring successive victories for Brent were Top Board player Alex Sycip, Grade 7, and Shang Zhi “Desmond” Ho, Grade 4. However, Brent’s Board 3 chesser, Tanner Sale, Grade 4, lost his game that averted a shutout win against Don Bosco.
In an earlier game, Round 8, the Lion Chess Kings was subdued by a higher-ranked San Beda College chess team, 0.5 – 3.5. Alex Sycip overlooked the winning move on his game at Board 1 to let his opponent escape a draw via perpetual check on Alex’s king. The rest of the players, namely, Jun Yep “ Alex” Chung (Board 2), Min Suk “Frank” Kwon (Board 3), and Desmond Ho (Board 4), all lost their games against their more-experienced rivals.
According to Brent Chess Team Coach, Joel Hicap, our players are gaining the much needed experience and exposure in this event. Even though its the first time for Brent to join in the chess competition of PRADA, our players displayed competitive skills and focus in their games to held their ground against their seasoned opponents.
APAC Girls Volleyball
The girls’ varsity volleyball team had a very successful season. After losing most of their starting line up from the year before, the squad showed extreme improvement during the season and took second place in both the LSMS league and APAC.
The girls played their best games during the season at APAC and had gone undefeated going into the championship match. Brent gave Seoul Foreign School their best competition during the tournament but unfortunately lost in three sets. Congratulations go out to Senior Alex Ong who was named to the All-APAC team.
The team would like to thank all the fans that came out to support them during the season and showed school spirit during the APAC tournament. Congratulations to all the girls for having a great season, but especially to the four seniors that we will be sad to see go, Alex Ong, Bella Gormley, Selina Artadi, and Naho Sakamoto.
APAC Baseball
The Brent Lions baseball team traveled to Shanghai American School, Puxi campus in Shanghai, China over the weekend to compete in the six team APAC baseball tournament. The Lions were joined in Shanghai by five other teams all vying for the Title of APAC champions. The schools were from all over Asia and included The International School of Beijing, Shanghai American School Puxi campus, Shanghai American School Pudong campus, Canadian Academy of Japan, and The Hong Kong International School. The Lions finished the tournament as the runner up losing to Hong Kong International School by a score of 9-6 in the championship game. The Lions played incredible baseball all weekend coming from behind in multiple occasions with a never say die attitude. The Lions were impressive on offense all weekend long amassing a total of 62 hits over 6 games finishing with a team batting average of .416. Several Lions shined at the plate including sophomores Mark Ong and Ben Cope who led the Lions hitting .476 and .474 respectively. Senior captain Yujiro Iida also hit well over the course of the tournament hitting .467, and Ritchie Sarabia added many clutch hits for the Lions ending with a batting average of .462.
The Lions opened up the tournament on Thursday morning against the Canadian Academy(CA) from Japan and started well, beating the dragons 13-0 in five innings. Yujiro Iida and Ben cope were both impressive on the mound in the victory throwing a combined no hitter to beat CA. At the plate the Lions saw a great effort from Bam Garcia who was 3-3 with a double, two singles and 4 RBI.
The Lions then played the International School of Beijing and lost a heart breaker 8-7. It was a back and forth game that saw the lead change 6 times with ISB scoring three runs in the last inning to snatch the victory away from the Lions. Yujiro Iida led the Lions at the plate against ISB going 2-4 with a double, a single and one RBI.
With the early loss to ISB the Lions were in a must win situation where the Lions had to win their next three games to make it to the Championship game. Their first game of this tough journey was against the tournament favorite Hong Kong International School Dragons. The Lions came ready to play though, and behind the strong pitching of Mark Ong got the victory. The Lions jumped ahead early to a 7-2 lead that they held until the fifth inning when HKIS stormed back to take the lead 8-7. The Lions would not quit however and took the lead right back scoring three in the next inning on a Yujiro Iida single and a Josh Rapaport double sealing the victory for the Lions.
In the Thursday night game the Lions played Shanghai American School Pudong campus and rolled to victory winning by a score of 14-2. The Lions were led on offense Bobbie Numata who was 3-3 with three hard hit singles, and Chino Santos who was 3-4 with three singles as well.
The last game of round robin play saw the lions take on the Eagles of Shanghai American School Puxi campus with the winner going to the championship game to take on HKIS. It was an absolute epic game that saw the Lions and Eagles battle all the way to the last out with the Lions winning by a score of 11-10. The Lions started the game slow and were down 4-0 in the third when the bats came alive. The Lions scored 5 runs in the bottom of the third inning with three of those runs coming on a homerun by Josh Rapaport. The Eagles answered right back scoring two in the next inning giving SAS the lead 6-5 heading into the bottom of the fourth. In the bottom of the fourth the Lions really came alive and scored six runs to take the lead right back by a score of 11-6. The eagles threatened again in the fifth inning scoring four but were unable to come all the way back due to a strong pitching effort by Seba Martinez-Miranda and the Lions moved on to the championship game against the Dragons of Hong Kong.
The Championship game was another thriller that was won by Hong Kong and their tough hitting. The final score was 9-6 and the Lions again competed until the very end. The Lions got in a hole early and were down 7-0 going into the bottom of the third inning. The Brent bats came alive however and answered with four runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning narrowing the lead to 7-4. The Dragons answered back in the next inning scoring two in the top of the fifth to stretch their lead to 9-4. The Lions had made a habit of coming from behind however and put two more runs across before the end of the game making the final score 9-6. The Lions received a great effort from Ben Cope who went 2-3 with a single and a double, as well as Mark Ong who was 2-4 with three RBI on the game.
Three Lions received all APAC honors. Junior catcher Bam Garcia had many timely hits in key situations and played well behind the plate limiting the opportunities for the opposing teams to steal on the Lions. Josh Rapaport received all APAC honors as well for his superb play defensively in center field and his power at the plate where he hit two doubles, a triple and a homerun. The last member of the Lion baseball team that received all APAC honors was Mark Ong who hit a Lion best .476 from the plate and came up clutch on defense when the Lions needed him.
The Lions continue their baseball season in two weeks when they begin the TOT baseball league on November 9th against De La Salle Zobel. The Lions could use your support so come on out every Sunday and root on your fellow Lions.
ISAC News
The Brent JV Girls volleyball team just concluded their season in fine fashion. This years ISAC tournament was held in Cebu so the team took the flight there on Wednesday, October 8.
Competition began the next day and Brent had 3 games. The first game was against defending champion Southville. The team lost this game but this would be the one and only loss for the rest of the tournament! The girls soon got back on track and beat host school Cebu International, then Brent Subic. After the exhaustion of Day 1, the girls got a good night sleep and were ready for Day 2. The first game was against British School who went down in straight sets. After that, both Brent Bagiuo and Faith Mindanao tried but failed to derail our girls who were on a serious roll towards the semis. The team ended the round robin segment tied for first place with a 5 wins 1 loss record, but came in second due to the tie break.
The semi final round began Saturday morning. The team would face host school Cebu for the chance to play in the championship game. The girls gave up the first set, but came back right away. They took care of Cebu in 3 sets and won their shot at the finals.
Going in to the finals, it was clear that our Brent team were the underdogs playing the 2 time defending champions Southville, an older Varsity team that practices year-round. But the entire crowd was on our side and showed it from the get-go.
Our Lions got off to a rocky first set and lost 25 to 18. The opponents had some good seves that were hard to handle. But our defense settled in with Misha Buensuceso and Annie Kim solid in the sweeper position.
The second set was no better though. The opponents took a devastating 2 to 0 set lead. The crowd was stunned. But our Lions were not! They refused to go down without a roar.
The team was not willing to lose in straight sets and they clawed their way back into the game by winning the 3rd set in dramatic fashion. When our girls won the 4th set, forcing a deciding 5th set, the fans were almost in a frenzy! The JV boys team were leading the cheers in the stands and the crowd was louder than before, cheering our girls on.
In the end, the deciding set was lost in what can only be described as great attempts. The come back that our girls showed made it seem like, even though they actually lost, they were the true winners!
In all, Klarizze Posadas set the pace with some great blocks and 7 spikes. Rachel Robinson contributed with 15 successful spikes and 6 kills. Annie Kim joined the offense with 8 spikes and 3 tips. The offensive queen title, hands down, goes to Misha Buensuceso who had 24 successful spikes and 6 kills with one block. The team service leader was Roma Hemlani who had many aces.
All Brent girls were able to contribute to this massive effort. Lighting the spark for the team when the team needed it the most were Fiona Faulkner and rookie Yoon-Ah Kim.
Fiona had 3 straight kills and a tip kill. Yoon-Ah had 6 spikes with no error and 2 kills to add to our score.
When it came to defense, Dani Delos Reyes takes the title for being “the master”. She was solid for the entire tournament!
Not enough can be said about setters. Jordan Valley and Ana Padilla , our hard working setters, never failed their team. These court generals led us through 8 games and into the final battle. Ana Padilla, as a rookie setter last year, stepped her game up at the most critical time. Jordan came in and owned the wing defense and acted as a second setter on the court in the finals.
This team would make any parent, coach and spectator proud. And they did! After the game, as they walked past the bleachers, the entire crown gave them a special acknowledgment and clapped and cheered. This was an emotional moment that the girls did not expect.
It should be expected though as this truly was an incredible team that played a higher level of volleyball. We are very, very proud of you girls!
Lions Win, Play in Championship Game
On Saturday the Brent Lions played in an exciting semi-final baseball game against De La Salle Zobel at the Brent Baseball Field. It was an epic match up that couldn’t be decided in regulation with Brent finally grinding out a victory in the eighth inning, winning 9-8.
It was a back and forth game that saw the Lions claw their way back into the game on several occasions. The Archers got the scoring under way first scoring one run in the first inning, taking advantage of a couple of Lion errors. The Lions answered back in the bottom half of the first however and scored two runs on a Mark Ong single to right center field. The Archers then answered in the top of the second scoring four runs to take the lead back by a score of 5-2. The Lions however refused to quit all day long and scored three in the bottom of the second to tie the score up 5-5. Chino Santos hit a huge double in the inning scoring both Denis Nelson and Ritchie Sarabia who reached base on walks, allowing the Lions to tie the game back up.
The Archers again took the lead in the top of the fourth inning taking advantage of another Lion error. They then stretched their lead in the top of the sixth inning by stringing a couple of base hits together to take an 8-5 lead going in to the bottom of the sixth inning. The Lions again came up clutch and narrowed their deficit to one run by scoring two in the bottom of the sixth inning on a single by Karl Gibson narrowing the Archers lead to 8-7. The Lions played tough defense in the top of the seventh and held the Archers scoreless keeping the Archers lead to just one run.
The first batter of the bottom of the seventh was Yujiro Iida. On the first pitch of the inning he hit a monster homerun to left field, the first over the fence homerun hit ever by a Brent student to tie the score up at 8-8. The archers held the lions the rest of the inning and they then went to extra innings. In the top of the eighth inning the Lions were in a jam with the bases loaded and zero outs when the defense stepped up big time. Yujiro Iida struck out the next batter and then Mark Ong and Chino Santos turned a beautiful double play to get the Lions out of a jam keeping the game tied 8-8. In the bottom of the eighth inning the Lions had a runner on third with only one out when Chino Santos got in a run down between third and home and narrowly escaped getting tagged and slid in safe at home to win the game for the Lions.
It was a huge victory for the Lions that saw many Lions have a great day both offensively and defensively. The Lions were lead on defense by Chino Santos who had an amazing diving play at second base, Ritchie Sarabia who made several great plays at first, Josh Rapaport who played solid in center field the entire day running down fly ball after fly ball, and Bam Garcia who got hit in the head while at bat in the fourth inning but toughed it out and played solid defense at catcher for the Lions. On offense the Lions were led by Karl Gibson who went 3-4 with a triple and 1 RBI and Mark Ong who also had a very successful day at the plate going 3-4 as well with 2 RBI. Seba Martinez-Miranda, Yujiro Iida, Denis Nelson, and Chino Santos all added hits as well for the Lions helping the Lions pull out the victory.
The Lions need your support next Saturday as they play in the championship game against Ateneo at 2:30pm at Brent International School Manila. The Lions lost the previous meeting against Ateneo by a score of 7-6. So come on out and support the Lions in what is sure to be a great game.
